Reporting to the Programme Director, the Engagement Director’s key responsibility is to develop strategies for building leverage in Southeast Asia through growing a movement of people and increasing our strategic deployment of their influence. This position develops the way that GPSEA works with strategic audiences, aligned to the organisations goals, while integrating our communications, actions and mobilisation to increase the impact of our campaigns.
The Engagement Director is also responsible for building GPSEA’s ability to identify, recruit, retain and utilise different types of supporters to develop our organisation in Southeast Asia.
The Engagement Director is responsible for refining and delivering an ambitious engagement strategy utilizing online and community based tools, ensuring a clear story of Greenpeace in Southeast Asia and supporting our growth, fundraising and campaigning goals through the development and implementation of bold public-engagement strategies to achieve global, high impact, agreed engagement, mobilisation and fundraising goals to deliver globally high impact campaigning strategies.
The work of the Engagement Department and national colleagues seeks to
- Inspire, mobilise and engage millions of people from Southeast Asia to campaign alongside us, through digital and other communications tools.
- Reach and empower a wider segment of society to be directly involved in our work, and know how to deploy them.
- Deepen supporter’s engagement with, and contributions to, our campaigns and vision.
- Enable our staff to run locally appealing, globally relevant campaigning projects.
- Build, promote and protect Greenpeace’s identity and profile in Southeast Asia.
To achieve all of this the Engagement Director will lead and develop a team of regional scope staff, and offer support and strategic input into development and implementation of projects. As a member of the Programme Leadership, the Engagement Director is also expected to contribute to the strategic management of the Programme.
The position will require travel in the region as well as other part of the world.
This is a full-time position based in either Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila and/or Kuala Lumpur.
- Ensure the development of an engagement culture and practice is central to GPSEA identity; that our actions (on land and on sea) are able to inspire and engage millions; and through developing digital and community engagement options.
- Rapidly grow and Increase the number and diversity of supporters across the region, in accordance with our campaigning and growth needs.
- Build a cost effective, well integrated and high delivery department
- Protect, expand and strengthen the Greenpeace profile in Southeast Asia
- Ensure the effective integration of communications, digital and media, public engagement, multimedia output, actions, investigations and campaign strategies, ensuring that overall engagement strategies include growth objectives and targets, considering breadth and depth of engagement.
MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Strategic development and implementation of an integrated GPSEA Engagement Strategy.
- Refine and deliver a high quality engagement strategy and implementation plan across all engagement functions resulting in increasing overall organizational expertise and Programme delivery and results. The Engagement strategy is to provide clear identification of audience, relevant, impactful requests for support and clear follow up and evidence based decision making as a key driver.
- Oversee/Sponsor the implementation of GPSEA’s Engagement Strategy
- Through this strategy, further develop a culture of engagement and conversion across all GPSEA departments promoting a clear understanding in GPSEA on the significance and importance of engagement, demonstrated through successful project delivery, both online and in communities.
- Promote GPSEA and its work as relevant, trusted and effective in South East Asia, engaging and mobilising millions of people in Southeast Asia to win campaigns with us.
- Deliver strategies that ensure clear campaigning communications, the Greenpeace story and GPSEAs legitimacy in the region, clearly aligned with Programme and Growth priorities.
- Deliver strategies that ensure a wide variety and volume of people in Southeast Asia to campaign with Greenpeace, based on utilising their influence and access to participation options.
- Support the development of campaign or project specific communications strategies – providing high impact, low investment communications support.
- Through staff deployment to projects, ensure the production of content. Providing visual, digital, communications and other content aligned with project, programme and organisational priorities.
- Build knowledge, information and insights management systems
- Build an effective system to ensure the capture of key data, content development, people coordination and movement and the role of media and crisis communications, allowing for evidence based decision making within GPSEAs campaigning, fundraising and engagement work.
- As part of our campaigns and calls to action, ensure GPSEA’s convergence of communications channel maximize reach, and provides dynamic options for involvement.
- Ensure GPSEA as an early adaptor, on the cutting edge of technologic and organizing trends in SEA.
- Ensure evidence-based decision-making through the collection, analysis and application of relevant metrics and other measures to our engagement.
- Develop and drive communications and engagement skills and knowledge internal to GPSEA focusing on internal capacity improvement.
- Staff Management
- Manage the Engagement Department Units, in multiple countries.
- Build capacity and capability in the Engagement community across Departments and countries, adding value to the integrated IDEAL campaigning model within GPSEA.
- Provide support and advise to Programme Director on project engagement work and potential, including assistance with identifying strategic audiences, and project development and resourcing solutions.
- Lead and shape the vision that will best support the engagement communities of practice.
- Programme Leadership
- As a part of the Programme Director’s Team (PDT), contribute to the overall strategic management of the programme, providing input into the formulation and executions of strategic decisions to ensure the achievement of GPSEA’s programme and organizational objectives.
Educational Background & Fundamental Qualifications
Level of Education: Academic qualification in relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience
Field of Study: Preferably involving Management, Communications, Community Development, or Social Sciences (or related work experience)
Work Experience: At least 6 years of professional experience with demonstrated results in developing and executing campaign, activism, mobilization and/or communications strategies.
Including experience in Project Management, CMS and CRS systems and data management, and demonstrated delivery of targets in dynamic environments

Normal hours of work for full time Employee will be forty (40) per week or (5) days in a week, at 8 hours per day excluding an hour lunch break. This will be from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am to 6: 30 pm. Ordinary hours of work may be varied as agreed between staff and the line managers.
A permanent employee will be entitled to the following leaves:
Annual Leave: 20 days
Parental Leave: As per labor laws and Greenpeace policy
Long Service Leave: 2 months paid leave after 5 years of continuous service
Compassionate leave: maximum of 5 days for the death of significant others
In determining salary offer for this position, Greenpeace applies its Salary Grading Process, taking into consideration the job description and applicant’s previous experience, and the organization’s salary grade.
