Position: Play and Child Development Advisor (1 open position)

The Play and Child Development Advisor will be based in Mae Sot, Tak province, with frequent travel to 3 camps in Tak and 2 camps in Mae Hong Son province.

HI is an international non-governmental, non-religious, non-political and non-profit making organization specialized in the field of disability. It works alongside people with disabilities, offering them assistance and supporting them in their efforts to become self-reliant.  Since its creation, the organization has set up programs in approximately 60 countries worldwide and intervened in many emergency situations. 

 

HI in Thailand is currently supporting projects along the Thailand - Burma border focusing on the following:

  • Rehabilitation Project: provision of functional rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities in 5 temporary shelters (Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces),
  • Disability and Social Inclusion Project: Social inclusion of People with Disabilities and mainstreaming disability into humanitarian services in 5 temporary shelters (Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces),
  • Growing Together Project: in 5 temporary shelters (Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces) focusing on enabling vulnerable children including children with disabilities, to develop their full potential on an equal basis with other children and acquire fundamental educational and social skills, as well as support to their family members and/or caregivers and,
  • Risk Education Project: raising awareness activities on the risk of mines and explosive remnants of war, which is implemented in all 9 temporary shelters (Tak, Mae Hong Son, Ratchaburi and Kanchanabui province).

 

Play and Child Development Advisor’s general mission:

1)      Assist Manager to design, advise, monitor and report on implementation and management of the Growing Together project activities, especially those related to the inclusive play and child development component, which uses play and creative arts-based methodology as the main driver to promote the development and psycho social support needs of vulnerable children including those with disabilities;

2)      Enhance capacity of Growing Together Camp Based Staff to ensure the quality of the project activities and services, and promote inclusion of children with disabilities and their equal participation in families, schools, neighborhoods.

 

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

Responsibility 1: Participate in strategy development, planning, monitoring and implementation of the Growing Together project activities related to child development and play component and ensure provision of quality services in accordance with HI principles and rules.

Aim: Ensure the child development and child-centered related activities are implemented on time with the adequate quality of services.

 

Responsibility 2: Empower, build capacity and coach HI camp based staff, community staff and camp based staff from other agencies, both international NGOs and Camp Based Organizations, on Growing Together project activities, mainly those related to the play and child development component.

Aim: Build capacity of Growing Together camp based staff to be able to provide community services with high quality standards, as well as community volunteers, parents and /or caregivers and service providers.

 

Responsibility 3: Ensure communication, networking and coordination at field level for Growing Together activities.

Aim: Under the supervision of his/her line manager, ensure implementation of good practices and good communication among agencies, partners and community representatives.

 

Other: delegation

In addition, the Inclusive Play and Child Development Advisor may be requested to undertake any other duty that is considered necessary for the well-running of the service requested by his line manager.

 

Qualifications required/ Desired Profile:

Education: University degree in the field of child development, special education, occupational therapy, social sciences/work or related field.

 

Knowledge and skills required:

  • Experience in disability sector strongly recommended.
  • Knowledge and practice experience in one of the domains of intervention of the program: child development/early child development, child-centered methodology, play as a tool for development, inclusive play, and social inclusion of people/ children with disability.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing training / capacity building / coaching.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with partners, civil society organizations or public authorities.
  • Knowledge and at least 2-year experience in project implementation.
  • Knowledge and experience in report writing desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient using the Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and mail merges; email and web searches.
  • Experience in budget management.

 

 

Extra requirement:

  • Minimum of 2-year practical experience in a similar position.
  • Working experience in refugee context is an added value.
  • Professional experience working with refugees in the Thai-Burma border, especially parents and vulnerable children.
  • Practical experience in working with vulnerable groups and human rights.

 

Other qualifications:

Language: Good level of written, reading and spoken English and Thai. Knowledge of Karen or Burmese will be an advantage.

Active listening, sense of negotiation, self-initiative, intellectual flexibility, adaptation skills, ability to create team spirit and to support team building, autonomy in work and experience in accompanying a team and finding practical solutions.
